The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey tried to raise the Bayonne Bridge by 64 feet to make room for more ships below. The price for the project has risen along with the bridge.

The project is elevating the bridge while trying to avoid lengthy closures to auto traffic. The project, however, has run into challenges that have run the price tag from an original $1.3 billion to almost $1.7 billion.
