For every feel-good story about urban revitalization, or more problematic tale of gentrification, the experience in much of Detroit has more to do with decline.

"For all the talk about gentrification, much of Detroit is still reeling from a housing crisis that decimates neighborhoods and displaces residents," writes Joel Kurth.
That conclusion is based on the research of Eric Seymour, a Brown University post-doctorate researcher, "who has extensively studied Detroit’s neighborhoods," explains Kurth.
Specifically, Seymour says the foreclosure crisis of the Great Recession is still affecting the city.
The bulk of the article consists of an interview between Kurth and Seymour, digging into topics of gentrification, neighborhoods, and Dan Gilbert.
