A proposed project that would widen and add toll lanes to a section of the I-25 freeway between Colorado Springs and Denver has received a key chunk of funding.
"El Paso County likely will contribute $15 million to the widening of Interstate 25 from Monument to Castle Rock, fulfilling the project’s $35 million local fundraising goal," reports Rachel Riley.
The project still needs to nail down $65 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation to cover the full amount of the $350 million project. "If the project doesn’t receive the federal award, state officials have said they will have to re-evaluate the plan to finance the project," according to Riley.
The funding would allow the Colorado Department of Transportation to widen an 18-mile stretch of I-25 from Monument to Castle Rock to make way for toll lanes. So far, the toll lane component is the least popular part of this project.
