SB 827, the controversial housing bill proposed by State Senator Scott Wiener, had a very brief run in the California State Legislature.

California's much-discussed housing upzone bill, SB 827, failed in committee this on Tuesday. After months of debate and several rounds of amendments, the bill had only a single, but apparently raucous, hearing in Sacramento.
"Sen. Scott Wiener’s Senate Bill 827 failed its first test in the Capitol on Tuesday, when it was rejected by a majority of the senate’s transportation and housing committee," reports Jenna Chandler.
"Several lawmakers who serve on that committee said they support the bill’s goal of creating more housing, because the state sorely needs it. But they argued it wouldn’t be a good fit for small, rural towns, and they said its affordable housing provision wasn’t strong enough," adds Chandler.
For additional coverage of the committee's action to kill the bill, see also an article by Katy Murphy. Sen. Scott Wiener is quoted in Murphy's article, saying that he intends to put forward another proposal similar to SB 827 next year.
