A Chicago Department of Transportation commissioner calls the trend "very troubling."
By the end of April, 18 pedestrians in Chicago had already been struck and killed by cars in 2018. "That’s up from the 2012-2016 average of 12.4 pedestrian deaths during the same four-month period – a 45 percent increase," John Greenfield reports for Streetsblog Chicago.
According to Greenfield, CDOT Commissioner, Rebekah Scheinfeld, called these statistics "very troubling," and said the department needs to partner with sister agencies and community groups to "change the culture."
The rise in deaths in Chicago comes at a time when pedestrian deaths are also up around the country.
