A small city in the South Bay Area, south of San Jose, has approved its first multi-family housing project—because state law mandated it.
"It’s been 10 years in the making, but Tuesday night the city of Monte Sereno approved its first-ever housing project that includes multi-family housing," reports Judy Peterson.
Earlier this week, the City Council "voted 3-2 to approve a 36-home subdivision, Montalvo Oaks, that includes 21 market rate single-family homes and 15 market rate multi-family homes," according to Peterson.
The approval came not as a reflection of YIMBY politics, but in response to a history of lawsuits, including one by the property owner of the development claiming Monte Sereno's "'persistent refusal' to meet state housing laws."
This approval settles the lawsuit, and "brings Monte Sereno into compliance with state-mandated housing requirements."
