Chile's President, Sebastian Piñera, announced that Santiago's rail system will add two new lines and extend one of its existing train routes.

On the first of this month, Chilean PresidentSebastian Piñera outlined a plan to build two new train lines and a line expansion in Santiago. The plan includes more than 40 km of new train lines in the seven million person city.
"Metro construction in the Chilean capital has to meet socio-economic evaluation criteria but recent governments have steered network expansion towards projects that either reduce overloading on existing lines or bring the benefits of metro connectivity to lower income urban dwellers," Ian Thomson-Newman writes for the International Rail Journal. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2026. "Clearly, a mammoth construction exercise, the likes of which the city has never previously seen, should soon be underway," Thomson-Newman reports.
