How to design a transit system that is safe, green, and beautiful.

A new guide to transit design from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) offers research and best practices for creating sustainable transportation systems at the regional, city, neighborhood, and street levels.
The guide is organized around the qualities that ASLA says professionals should strive to achieve in a successful transportation system, which it defines as low-emission, active, safe, equitable, resilient, ecological, and beautiful.
"Access to such healthy, sustainable transportation options should be viewed as a right," the guide reads. Other recommendations include "design[ing] for safety" and adopting a green infrastructure framework that "work[s] with natural systems to capture and filter stormwater, reduce flooding, support pollinator species, strengthen biodiversity, and protect wildlife populations."
ASLA will crowdsource updates for the guide on a continuous basis, inviting readers to submit research for inclusion.
