San Jose, California is suddenly taking a much more permissive approach to large billboards.

"Residents of San Jose can expect to see more advertising as they go about the city in the coming months," reports Emily Deruy, after the City Council reversed a decades-long ban on new signs.
The decision allows "new billboards and electronic signs on some city-owned land downtown and near the airport," according to Deruy.
The city will send a request for proposals before allowing new billboards on the selected sites.
As for the potential of expanding the proliferation of billboards to private property, the city also "decided to move forward with a plan to evaluate allowing new billboards on private property," reports Deruy.
