Doug Ford's Progressive Conservative government is proving to be a harsh critic of plans for light rail transit in Mississauga.
The planned Hurontario LRT project, a light rail transit connection between the Port Credit Go station in Mississauga northwest and the Gateway Terminal in nearby Brampton, is under threat from the Progressive Conservative government lead by Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
Earlier this week, according to an article by Graeme Frisque, "the opposition NDP issued a release stating it was concerned for the future of the $1.5 billion project, which was slated to be completed by 2022."
A statement in response from Ontario Ministry of Transportation Press Secretary Justine Lewkowicz read as follows:
We have to eliminate the inefficiencies of the previous Liberal government and make sure we invest in efficient and effective transit projects that achieve the best value for our customer — the Ontario taxpayer. Our decisions will be based on what is best for the people of the GTHA, including Peel Region.
As of this writing, the Ford administration is still promising to discuss the project and determine the best way forward.
