The city of Des Moines is hoping to update its zoning code for the first time since 1965.

Kim Norvell reports on the changes to the zoning code in Des Moines: "Des Moines' new zoning code will make it easier and quicker for developers to build in the city, while also preserving or increasing property values, city officials say."
Despite those lofty goals, Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity has released analysis that says the zoning requirements for single-family housing will push the cost of construction out of the range of affordable housing developers.
Released in May, the 330-page Zoning Code will now face a six-month public comment period before the City Council can decide its fate.
Norvell also provides details about the code is intended to encourage mixed-use development, green space, and bike and pedestrian friendly improvements.
The draft Zoning Code is designed to implement the vision described in PlanDSM, the Comprehensive Plan adopted by the city in 2016.
