Two new mandatory topic areas will be required of AICP members to maintain professional certification.
A recent post on the American Planning Association (APA) website details changes to the Certification Maintenance (CM) Program of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
According to the website, the changes add two new mandatory topics: 1) Equity and 2) Sustainability and Resilience. The website does warn that the Sustainability and Resilience could change in the future. The AICP Commission will rotate this "targeted topic," according to the website, "to reflect the professional development needs of planners in a rapidly changing world."
Equity has been a hot topic in planning throughout the pandemic, especially as a result of the Black Lives Matter protests that swept the nation after several high-profile police killings in 2020, leading many advocates to call for change in the way the APA and the AICP approach race.
The changes are scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2022. Members will have a full two-year reporting period to earn the credits.
