A complete streets makeover is taking shape for Duke Street in Alexandria.
Planners in Alexandria, Virginia are working on a transit-focused makeover for Duke Street, a key corridor in the city that has attracted bike-related controversy in the past.
"Mack Schnaufer, the city’s bus-rapid transit (BRT) manager, said a BRT route is being considered for Duke Street and would run from the King Street Metro station to Landmark Mall, reports Vernon Miles for Alx Now.
The plan will also consider adding bikes lanes and infrastructure to support shared bikes and micromobility options, despite past controversies and current critics of the idea. Critics of the BRT also cited low ridership on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Metroway system. "Schnaufer said that, Pre-COVID, Metroway has been exceeding its early projections and no ridership goals have been set yet for Duke Street," according to Miles.
