A road widening and interchange improvement project in Atlanta will have a dramatic impact on congestion for as much as a year.

David Wickert reports that officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation are warning drivers to avoid the Interstate 285 and Georgia 400 interchange as construction there picks up in the coming months—or face likely brutal congestion.
"The reduction in lanes could last until next summer as construction delays push completion of the new interchange well into 2022," according to Wickert.
Traffic was already horrible at the intersection, where more than 400,000 vehicles pass each day, "though it was designed to handle just 100,000."
"To address the traffic bottleneck, GDOT is rebuilding the interchange and adding new lanes alongside I-285 and Ga. 400. The $800 million project also includes rebuilding nearby interchanges and replacing numerous bridges," according to Wickert.
