The first of 15 bus rapid transit stations in St. Petersburg was unveiled last week.
The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has just completed the first station for Tampa Bay's first bus rapid transit (BRT) line, scheduled to open in 2022. The 10.3-mile SunRunner, as the line is known, will connect St. Petersburg, South Pasadena, and St. Pete Beach on "semi-dedicated" lanes, reports Veronica Brezina.
When complete, the SunRunner will feature 15 double-sided stations with service every 15 minutes in the daytime. According to the PSTA website, the line will include "limited stops and safety enhancements for riders including level boarding platforms and ADA compliant crosswalks." Local officials hope the new line will encourage transit-oriented development near the stations, such as a 28-story mixed-use building planned near a station on 1st Avenue.
The SunRunner is part of a plan by the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority to develop a 41-mile rapid transit system connecting Tampa and St. Petersburg.
