D.C. Delays Bus Lane Enforcement

The program using cameras to ticket drivers who block bus lanes was scheduled to begin this week.

Washington, D.C.’s District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will delay fining drivers who block bus lanes, reports Sarah Y. Kim in DCist, citing a need to “finalize operations with WMATA.”

For now, drivers who violate the policy will receive warnings by mail, but no fines. “When enforced, the fines are expected to be as high as $100 for driving in a bus-only lane and $200 for parking or standing in the lanes.” As Kim points out, “The use of automated bus-mounted cameras to enforce bus lane restrictions is the first program of its kind in the country.”

DDOT did not offer a new enforcement date.
