A Salvation Army shelter near the Georgia Aquarium plans to expand its facility to include 437 shelter beds, as well as educational, financial, and other assistance programs for residents.

A Salvation Army shelter for unhoused people in Atlanta is planning to expand its facility north of Centennial Olympic Park, reports Josh Green in Urbanize Atlanta. According to Green, “Invest Atlanta’s board recently approved a $2 million Westside Tax Allocation District Ascension Fund Grant expected to help the project get off the ground.”
The project will double the size of the current facility and increase the number of shelter beds from 321 to 437. “Plans call for two floors of dormitory-style housing for male residents, and another two floors of individualized living spaces.”
The new center, which will begin construction in 2024, will also include an Education and Workforce Development Center that “will offer services to residents such as housing solutions, financial education, emergency assistance programs, and other specialized programs designed to support veteran services.”
