The Brightline West high-speed rail (HSR) line between Las Vegas and Southern California broke ground last week, with trains scheduled to begin operating by 2028, when Los Angeles hosts the Summer Olympics, reports Ken Ritter for the Associated Press.

The 218-mile rail line will connect passengers to Southern California’s commuter rail system, Metrolink, in Rancho Cucamonga, with a stop in the Victorville area. The line will be built primarily in the median of Interstate 15. The project received $3 billion in federal funding last December and has earned high praise from federal transportation officials.

Brightline, which already operates a train line between Miami and Orlando in Florida, plans to expand to other regions. Brightline West will be the nation’s first ‘true’ high-speed passenger rail line and will make the trip in just over two hours.
