Kissimmee, Florida is considering allowing homeowners to convert garages to residential accessory dwelling units to alleviate the region’s affordability crisis. Development Services Director Craig Holland said the program could help create more affordable housing units, and the city is exploring ways to support homeowners who want to take on conversion projects.

According to a video report from WESH 2 News, the city is still finalizing requirements for the program. As of now, ADUs must be at least 500 square feet, have a separate entrance, kitchen, and bathroom, and at least one parking spot.

Proposed rules would require the unit to remain affordable for at least 15 years and rent would be tied to tenant income.
