Ottawa hopes to channel future development into more compact neighbourhoods, with special attention for infill developments and higher densities in the inner city.

"After two years of meetings, consultants' studies and debate, Ottawa City Council has approved a new urban plan that tries to stop sprawl and concentrate future growth inside the greenbelt that circles the city.That doesn't sound revolutionary, but, by Ottawa standards and those of other Canadian municipalities, refocusing growth away from suburban or ex-urban sprawl is something rather new."
