City planner Michael Gordon had a personal reason for wanting Vancouver's skateboarding rules relaxed this month -- he rides 22 blocks to work each day. But there's a lot more to it than that
"Vancouver [is] the most skateboard-friendly city in North America. It's one of the very few big cities that allow skateboarding on the street. In most municipalities, doing so brings a stiff fine, if not the confiscation of the board -- something Vancouver police can no longer do...cities friendly to [skateboarders] are generally more interested in cultivating an artistic, innovative population, the kind that makes a city thrive...A recent study by Mr. Florida and University of Toronto urban theorist Meric Gertler ranked Canadian cities by their bohemian content, placing Vancouver first, followed by Toronto, Victoria and Montreal."
