Plants and animals introduced to the Catalina ecosystem since the 1800s have caused destruction to native species. The Catalina Island Conservancy has been successful in its 30-year project to return the island to its natural state by destroying invading weeds, plants animals. Although many ecologists have praised the efforts of the Conservancy, critics argue that some decisions have been purely profit-based and intended to draw tourists.
