Roanoke, Virginia Transit Station Plan Would Add Housing and Commercial Space

A plan to move a Roanoke, Virginia bus stop would use the current location of the stop to build transit-oriented apartments and shops.

Roanoke city officials hope their new development will "check multiple boxes." The project would include: "a plan for a new bus station, a new train station and a $25 million enclave of shops, apartments and offices downtown," Jeff Sturgeon and Matt Chittum write for the News Advance. The city will be moving the transit stations that currently exist but, rather than selling off the existing property, the city hopes to create a development on that land.

"The city council on Monday endorsed the proposed purchase of one and two-thirds acres of land currently used as a daily and monthly parking lot at Third Street and Salem Avenue," Sturgeon and Chittum report. That land would be the location of the new bus and train stations.
