County Approves Age-based Zoning Restrictions

A retirement mecca south of Tampa has persuaded Hillsborough County Commissioners to approve an age restriction that prevents young families from living in any of its 5,700 households.

The ordinance requires that at least one member of all Sun City Center households governed by the community association be at least 55 and prohibits anyone younger than 19 from visiting for more than 30 days a year. The 5-2 vote makes Hillsborough County the first East Coast county to adopt a zoning restriction based on age, and only the second county to do so in the country.
