City planners are rewriting zoning codes to create pedestrian-friendly hubs around proposed light-rail stops.
"'Transit-oriented zoning,' which could see its first approval by the Phoenix City Council this fall, promises to slowly remake the landscape surrounding the train tracks into something that looks a little less like freeway-filled Houston and a little more like sidewalk-crazy Portland. The idea is to make the light rail stations more than concrete platforms but interesting places to linger and browse and sip cafe lattes."
