Proposal by Aerojet General Corp. to cleanup polluted aquifer is rejected.
The San Gabriel Valley aquifer provides most of the drinking water in the area, at much lower cost than imported water. The San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority and EPA believe Aerojet to be the largest of 19 polluters of the 16-year-old Superfund site. Aerojet's proposal was $48 million; cleanup estimates range to $200 million, raising the possibility of litigation.
