Buses use a special "queue-jumper" lane which gives them a green light before other lanes.
"The signal, called a "queue jumper," is activated by pavement sensors each time a Capital District Transportation Authority bus rolls forward to a stop line after picking up riders. The system was installed at a new bus shelter on the edge of Riverfront Park. The queue jumper, a separate traffic light for the bus, alerts the bus driver when the light at Fulton and Third streets will turn green. That gives the bus driver time to nose the bus ahead of cars, into a space between the head of the line and the intersection."
