The Census Bureau announces that Latinos are now the largest minority group in the U.S., and accounted for half of the country's growth since 2000.
"Figures released in Washington placed the Latino population at 38.8 million in July 2002, an increase of nearly 10% from the 2000 census. The bureau estimated the African American population at 38.3 million. Each group accounts for a little more than 13% of the overall U.S. population... Although the Latino population is still heavily concentrated in the West, census and other studies have shown a trend toward dispersal around the country. Analysis of census data by the Rivera Institute showed that Latinos outnumber African Americans in 23 states.
