The awards from the Smart Cities Council will support communities as they pursue smart technologies initiatives.

The Smart Cities Council has announced five winners of the Smart Cities Readiness Challenge: Baltimore; Edmonton, Alberta; Montgomery, Alabama; Racine, Wisconsin; and Cleantech San Diego.
The communities will participate in a 12-month Readiness Program, which will include community workshops and coaching and mentoring from the Smart Cities Council to develop initiatives. "Initiatives range from establishing smart cities committees to designing programs to enhance government services," writes Chris Teale.
The council received over 100 applications for the competition. Applicants had to outline at least three smart city projects that would improve the lives of residents. For example, Baltimore wants to continue developing collaborative, data-driven approaches to addressing environmental and social issues facing the city.
