Reno officials hope to protect public green space in the Truckee Meadows before potential new development arrives.

Reno residents have an opportunity to suggest new trails for hiking, biking, and other activities in Truckee Meadows.
At two public workshops in May, residents will be invited to review an inventory of existing trails and to suggest new routes by drawing "desire lines." The feedback will inform a public lands management plan by Truckee Meadows Trails, the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency, and the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada to protect and enhance the region's trails. Benjamin Spillman provides details on how to access the workshops in the Reno Gazette Journal.
Beyond providing open space for community recreation, planners say defining the routes is important to ensure their protection if faced with future development. Additionally, "communities with publicly supported trails plans and networks tend to fare better when it comes to applying for funds for maintenance and expansion," Spillman notes.
