U.S. Department of Transportation engineers are hoping that new technology will make driving safer.

"Some of the technology, the simplest stuff, is already on the market," Jeffrey Paniati, associate administrator of the DOT's Intelligent Vehicle Initiative, said Tuesday during a demonstration at a Virginia test facility. "The technology exists to do any of this. It's not pie-in-the-sky type stuff." But, there are some hurdles to further advancing the in-car technology, such as cost and the human factor.
