The California Coastal Commission is caught between environmental activists and a persistent landowner on issuing a permit in an environmentally-sensitive area.
The California Coastal Commission is delaying its decision on whether or not to issue a permit to Spanish-language television magnate A. Jerrold Perenchio, for the pitch and putt golf course that he built on an environmentally-sensitive area in Malibu. Although Perenchio has offered the first right to purchase the property for public parkland, and has tried to argue that a golf course would have far less impact on the wetlands than building 40 houses on the 10 acres, environmental activists are calling the golf course "a violation of coastal development rules" and have "hinted" that a lawsuit will follow if the commissioners do not reject the permit. The Commission is carefully thinking over its final decision, in order to avoid litigation from either side.
