Reviving The Los Angeles River

The 58-mile, often dry, concrete-lined Los Angeles River is a far cry from New York's East River. But that is changing, albeit slowly.

"In at least five places along the river, beautification is either underway or proposed. Five members of the Los Angeles City Council have formed an ad hoc committee to expedite developments. Long Beach is gathering funds for a park along its nine-mile stretch of the river... Mia Lehrer, a landscape architect who supervised the Harvard design students who studied the river, said, 'We're thinking big. You can take out the concrete. Boston and New York have done it.'"
