The Port Authority of Allegheny County is slowly but surely removing a significant number of bus stops from 98 routes in the system. Two routes are under review right now.
Ed Blazina reports from Pittsburgh: "Port Authority will begin rolling out a plan later this week to consolidate bus stops along two routes, 16 Brighton and 51 Carrick, with a goal of improving on-time performance and eliminating little-used, redundant or unsafe stops."
"The authority announced Tuesday it would begin hanging signs along those two routes at stops that are scheduled to be eliminated," explains Blazina. "It will take feedback from the public for several weeks and then announce its final decisions on which stops will be eliminated by the end of October."
In total, the Port Authority is planning to remove 33 of 127 stops on the Brighton 16 and 39 of 180 stops from the 51 Carrick. By thinning the number of stops on bus routes, the Port Authority's is trying to speed up buses for better on-time performance. The city has plans to expand the effort to "two to four routes each quarter until it has finished all 98 routes and more than 7,000 stops in the system."
