High school students create proposals for a hypothetical city.
"Four high schools from the Los Angeles Unified School District have received the opportunity to participate in a new program called Urban Plan, a community planning course sponsored by the Urban Land Institute, Los Angeles, a nonprofit education and research institute focusing on urban planning. More than 100 students from Reseda, Kennedy, Cleveland and Wilson high schools learned the complexities of planning a development site while earning class credit. The classes read books and articles about urban planning and architecture, heard lectures from Urban Land Institute members, and took field trips to places around town. This opportunity opened the students' eyes to the challenges of designing a city. The Urban Land Institute donated nearly $30,000 to Urban Plan, and plans to expand the program to more high schools. It even awarded more than $10,000 in scholarships to five top-ranking teams from. In the end, these students not only gained high school credit, they also gained invaluable experience in planning a community."
