The Urban Land Institute analyzes several Washington D.C. commercial strips and has come up with a guiding set of generic principles or "Ten Commandments" to aid in the revitalization and restructuring of suburban commercial strips. Striving to create a site with a variety of uses that is walkable, integrated into a neighborhood and well-served by its connecting roads may help to change the role of the strip mall from local eyesore to proud, local meeting place. City of Los Angeles Planning Director Con Howe comments on the relevance of the principles in Southern California.
