What started as a novel experiment on the New York State Thruway, a 1950s-era interstate, in 1993, has taken off all along the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coastal regions.
"Growth in E-ZPass use has been aided over the last decade by a new consortium of regional toll agencies that settled on one manufacturer and type of technology in the mid-1990s as they developed similar systems and began distributing their own tags.In addition to the Thruway's 1.6 million active tags, the transponders manufactured by an Amherst-based company called Mark IV are distributed by agencies including the MTA Bridge & Tunnel Authority and the Port Authority of NY and NJ in New York state, and toll road operators in Massachusetts and New Jersey. As a result, what started as a novel experiment on the Thruway, a 1950s-era interstate, has taken off all along the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coastal regions. It's now possible to travel from Boston into Delaware, and over several bridges on the edges of the Washington, D.C., metro area using E-ZPass."
