A broader evidence base can more effectively evaluate policies for preventing and ending homelessness, according to a recent study published by Housing Policy Debate.

Abe Oudshoorn writes to explain recent research by Deden Rukmana, professor of Community Regional Planning and Alabama A&M University, into how intercity and intracity data can help forge policies that prevent homelessness.
The study, titled "The Causes of Homelessness and the Characteristics Associated With High Risk of Homelessness: A Review of Intercity and Intracity Homelessness Data" and published by the Housing Policy Debate journal, identifies numerous intercity and intracity factors contributing to homelessness and also suggests three promising policy approaches that respond to the data: 1) rent control, rental assistance, and affordable housing policy.
The study's abstract begins to make the case that intercity and intracity data on homelessness is complementary, not contradictory, for finding policy solutions to homelessness.
