Preserving Affordable Housing in Trailer Parks

Trailer parks are housing the middle class in Boulder, CO, and the concept is being demonstrated as a way to address the affordable housing shortage.

A partnership of residents, city officials and a nonprofit organization is preserving affordable housing in a trailer park in Boulder,CO--where the median price for a house is over $400,000. "The 132 homes are relics of a bygone era. Most are 52 feet long and only 12 feet wide. Such narrow homes are no longer manufactured. They sit close, separated by 10 to 15 feet. Residents pay $255 to $482 rent per month, depending on their income....The city bought the mobile home park land seven years ago in order to conduct flood-control work on a stream that cuts through the park. The City Council committed to keep the trailer park affordable."
