Different Visions For Fort Lauderdale Riverfront

Environmentalists daydream about a serene slice of Old Florida lined with pedestrian loops, bike routes and overlooks for fishing or gazing -- an Everglades experience in the inner city. Others see the same riverbanks, which run through poor black neighborhoods, as the black community's best bet for attracting the middle class and affluent African-Americans into the area. Activists on all sides of the issue say it's just a matter of time before the riverfront is bought out. With the community's vision unclear, and government officials at odds, it's not clear whose dream will prevail.
