Gas Shortage Shows Need For Redundancy

Phoenix's gasoline shortage is making life intolerable for drivers and making mass transit a necessity.

The collapse of New York's subways in the recent blackout suggests to some that an auto-oriented city is better equipped to deal with disaster. But in Phoenix, a gasoline shortage caused by a pipeline rupture is bringing drivers to their knees and showing Phoenix residents that just as cities need buses as a back up in case a subway system fails, they also need public transit to back up cars and highways.
