"The Tube carries more passengers - three million a day - than the entire national rail network. But it has faced years of underinvestment... [Crossrail] would dramatically ease rush-hour congestion in central London and help to regenerate east London and the Thames Gateway. But it has been awaiting Government support for 14 years, and Transport Secretary Alistair Darling, despite supporting the idea, appears not to be pushing the project further."
