After the Twin Cities lowered speed limits in the urban core of the region in 2020, a trio of suburban cities are planning to follow. Two of the cities are planning to set some speed limits as low as 20 mph.
"Some inner-ring west metro suburbs are weighing lower speed limits to improve street safety for cyclists and pedestrians, following similar changes made by Minneapolis and St. Paul last spring," reports Erin Adler.
Three cities in all are considering a plan to lower speed limits to 20 or 25 mph: Golden Valley, Edina, and St. Louis Park.
Like Minneapolis and St. Paul, the three suburbs in 2019 gained local control of speed limits from the preemptive powers of the state government. The state still requires cities to complete a traffic study to lower speed limits below the 25 mph threshold. Golden Valley and St. Louis Park are both in the process of lowering speed limits to 20 mph in some parts of each city.
