A special trip billed to showcase Florida's East Coast Railway as an important alternative to trucks on the highway gave local officials a glimpse of what passenger service on the FEC might be like.

"Local officials considered using the FEC tracks when South Florida's 'Tri-Rail' system was being developed in the 1980's, but the FEC then refused to consider selling its track or using them for anything other than freight. Thus, Tri-Rail wound up on the CSX Transportation Company tracks that parallel Interstate 95, west of major downtown employers. With new management in place, FEC's top brass say they have an open mind about passenger service -- as long as freight remains the top priority."
