LA County Census Discussed

Local and state officials discuss LA County's high response rate; no mention of potential census abuses in Santa Monica.

Los Angeles County census managers met with state officials to discuss Los Angeles' strategy for success in achieving a 68% mail-in rate, well above the national average. In 1990, California had the largest undercount in the nation, with an estimated 300,000 residents in LA County undercounted. Surprisingly, there was no discussion about a Friday LA Times story spotlighting dramatic abuses in Santa Monica of "non-response follow-ups", in which workers cut corners to finish their follow-ups in record time.
