Downtown Sacramento's renaissance is nearing a critical mass, but can this sleepy town of 400,000 redefine itself as a an "international city?"
With a population of just 400,000, but the center of a region of 2 million and the heart of the state's capital, Sacramento faces the uphill battle of trying to reinvent itself as an "international" city. Al Gianini, executive director of the Sacramento Area Commerce and Trade Organization says: "We believe we're evolving into a mature metropolis... "We just have to convince everybody else of that." Sacramento's Base closures that began a decade ago have cost the region more than 20,000 jobs, and the city continues to battle the image of a flat agricultural expanse.
