Digital technology plays a vital role in modern urban forest management.
"Rochester, NY once called the city in a forest by one 19th century arborist has about 65,000 curbside trees alone in its database, with others counted in city-managed parks. City crews cut down as many as 500 dead or unstable trees a year and plant more than that. The city inventory keeps track of likely new tree-planting sites, with as many as 10,000 candidate locations in the database now. The planting success rate is 97 percent, in part because of the efficiencies of computerized records."
