Redevelopment plan for downtown Salt Lake City includes new campus for 3,000 students, as well as new residential highrises adjoining redeveloped commercial space.

"LDS Business College and Brigham Young University-Salt Lake extension will move to downtown Salt Lake City as part of the LDS Church's plan to redevelop the area, David Burton, the church's presiding bishop, said Wednesday... Although specific details were scarce, other plans unveiled Wednesday call for building two upscale residential towers and making some structural changes to the church-owned Crossroads Plaza and ZCMI Center malls... 'One of the best aspects of this is they're getting rid of above-ground parking and utilizing all of the space for housing, retail or walkable areas,' [said Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson after learning of the plan]... 'We just simply can't rely on the church alone to save Main Street,' [Mayoral candidate Frank Pignanelli] added. 'The city needs to be very aggressive about recruiting corporations and businesses to locate their headquarters in the downtown area and to provide more opportunities for housing.'"
