For the car-less in California, transit strikes are a real threat to jobs, education and health.
"Bus and train rides account for only 4% of L.A. commuter trips. The 400,000 daily public transit riders tend to be the poorest of the poor. The MTA says most are Latino, African-American or Asian, with an average annual income of just $12,000. For these car-less Californians, the strike poses a threat to jobs, education or health. ''Elderly people like me are prisoners in our apartments, as if we are in jail,'' says Hee Pok Kim, 80, a retiree in Los Angeles' Koreatown."
