City of London Could Set Speed Limits at 15 MPH

The City of London (not to be confused with the larger area of Greater London) will consider a plan to reduce speed limits throughout the "Square Mile" that outlines its boundaries.

The City of London is planning to reduce speed limits to 15 miles per hour citywide, according to documents expected for discussion in a transport committee next month, reports Carlton Reid. To be clear—the City of London refers to the "Square Mile" at the center of Greater London.

"In the document, Bruce McVean, acting assistant director of transportation at the City of London Corporation, reveals he is to seek permission for the speed limit change from England’s Minister of Transport, Grant Shapps," according to Reid.

McVean is aiming to have the reduce speed limits in place before the end of 2022.

This isn't the first time the City of London has considered reduced speed limits. In 2019, "AA president Edmund King said it would not make much difference because motor traffic in the Square Mile has 'moved no faster than a horse and cart for 100 years anyway.'"
